“[Barack Obama] didn’t get it right,” says Harry V. Jaffa, professor emeritus of Claremont McKenna College, senior fellow at the Claremont Institute, and author of two influential books on Lincoln.

Jaffa was referring to this quotation from President Obama.

“I’m a Democrat. But I believe what Republican Abraham Lincoln believed: That Government should do for people only what they cannot do better by themselves, and no more.”

Professor Jaffa noted that this quotation leaves out a great deal. The 93-year-old Jaffa recited the full statement from Lincoln’s speech, “The Nature and Objects of Government, with Special Reference to Slavery” (July 1, 1854) by memory:

“The legitimate object of government is to do for a community of people whatever they need to have done, but cannot do at all, or cannot so well do, for themselves in their separate and individual capacities.”

Notice the difference? The emphasis is on the need to have done, not on government doing the action. “That distinction was missing from his quotation,” Jaffa explains. Yet Obama has repeatedly invoked this misleading Lincoln quotation on both the campaign trail and during his presidency.

It is for the public to ask about those infrastructure projects: do we need green jobs that cost too much and reward political cronies?

Or a $787 billion stimulus in which only 5% goes to infrastructure projects, according to the Boston Globe?

In trying to make himself sound moderate, it is obvious that Obama doesn’t even believe his own version of Lincoln’s quotation. If he did, why is he creating health insurance exchanges in every state that will make it harder for individuals to buy insurance, and affect the in-state insurance rates? Why is he regulating our light bulbs? Our mortgages? Our banks?

Now, to be fair, Jaffa stresses that the founders’ vision isn’t for a small government, but a limited one necessary to protect its powers. Part of Lincoln’s genius, he said, was combining Jeffersonian ideals with Hamiltonian policy. Like the good Whig he once was, Lincoln favored infrastructure projects as a means of promoting the “American system” to increase trade.

Thomas L. Krannawiter, another Lincoln scholar and professor at Hillsdale College, explains it thusly in a 2004 book review for the Claremont Review of Books criticizing Mario Cuomo’s similar interpretation of Lincoln:

Of course, when Lincoln, along with many other Whigs, Democrats, and Republicans, supported what Henry Clay termed the “American System” of internal improvements and protective tariffs, he understood that all economics is political economics, that economics always serves political ends. … Lincoln’s political economics was a means toward limited government, the end of which was the protection of individual natural rights and political liberty, the principles upon which America was founded.

Krannawitter explains the end point of such thinking articulated by Cuomo and Barack Obama alike:

In the Progressive view, the ends of government cannot be limited to protecting natural rights, because nature supplies no rights, and positive rights created by government change over time. Thus limited government is replaced with government of unlimited power and scope, what some political scientists call the administrative state. Rejecting natural justice, the liberal mind concerns itself with “social justice,” which at a minimum requires vast redistributions of wealth from the few to the many. As the administrative state itself is the arbiter of what “social justice” on any day might entail, there can be no restraints on its power; the bigger government becomes, the more “rights” will be bestowed on the people.

That’s almost exactly what happened tonight. President Obama promised to use his executive authority to bestow rights and goods on the rest of America.

But conservatives, especially libertarians, have it wrong when they call for smaller government, Jaffa argues, because while the Founders believed in limited government, they often also favored measures such as levying tariffs, allowing the federal government to assume the debt of the states, and creating the National Bank. ”If Ron Paul were president, then, we wouldn’t have purchased Louisiana. Thomas Jefferson did,” Jaffa said.

In spite of the fact that Obama misquotes Lincoln repeatedly, expect Obama to continue to do so for his political ends. In trying to paint the Republicans as more extreme than the visionary who led their party, he hopes to run against Congress and win reelection. But it is he, not they, that misunderstands Lincoln as he tries to enslave us all to bigger and bigger government.

Newt Gingrich has recently taken heat for his 2009 endorsement of moderate Republican Dede Scozzafava in New York’s special election. Scozzofava eventually dropped out and endorsed the Democrat Bill Owens, who went on to win the race. But Mitt Romney’s past is not free of questionable endorsements. In 2002 Romney endorsed Rocky Anderson, the liberal Democrat who was Mayor of Salt Lake City, in his re-election bid. Anderson won re-election as Mayor of Salt Lake. In his second term Rocky Anderson became notable for his call for President Bush to be impeached over the War in Iraq and legalizing same-sex marriage.

After years of puzzlement and curiosity observing modern day Democrats, I think I have finally figured them out.

I’m constantly amazed that modern Democrats have evolved beyond living in caves. I mean what other animal on this planet can disregard all common sense and logic and survive? Scientists have recently discovered that even giant sea slugs that do not possess a brain as such can learn from past experiences. That puts them a leg up over the current crop of liberals in this country. I used to subscribe to the adage that liberalism was a mental disorder, but even Rainman would have a hard time buying into the standard mantra of the present day Democratic Party. In order to believe that Democrats have the answer today, you would have to believe:

That you can grow the entitlement class beyond the taxpayer class and never hit critical mass where there is no money left.

That using the military to oust a murderous thug dictator in 2003 was criminal, and using the military to oust a murderous thug dictator in 2011 was noble.

That the best way to grow the wealth of the private sector is to take all the money out of it.

That the best way to make us energy independent is to block any effort to produce more petrocarbons in this country.

That the best way to create jobs is to increase taxes and regulations on the job creators.

That the best way to stop arms from this country from getting into the hands of the drug cartels in Mexico is to provide arms to the drug cartels in Mexico.

That all the ills of the economy are due to the fat cat banks and other corporations, and the best way to deal with that is to provide billions in bailouts to the fat cat banks and other corporations.

That more unemployment checks create more jobs.

That investigating the background of George W Bush to the point that you have color photographs of his colon is proper vetting of the Chief Executive, but asking for Barack Hussein Obama’s college records or for information on his association with a known terrorist is racist.

That somehow making firearms illegal will prevent criminals from using them.

That the life of a murderer on death row is sacred, but an unborn baby’s is not.

That the best way to overcome our racist past is to enforce racist affirmative action policies.

That people who are too ignorant to get a free state issued I.D. card are smart enough to vote.

That the best way to overcome our current spending crisis is to spend more money.

That the federal government with no competition can provide a better health care product than the private sector with competition can.

That a grandma in a wheelchair is a bigger potential threat on an airplane than a guy with a name that takes phlegm to pronounce.

That we need to be sensitive to the feelings of people that subscribe to a religion that teaches that we all should submit to their version of righteousness or face beheading, but should demean and diminish those that believe in the religion that teaches we should love and embrace our neighbors no matter what religion they belong to.

That poll watchers who want to ensure that election laws are observed and the vote is without fraud are intimidating voters, and black radicals with clubs in front of a polling place are not.

That ice ages and the warming periods in between were not caused by man’s influence on the earth but a half degree rise in average temperatures over 30 years is.

That using the equivalent of two gallons of fossil fuel to produce one gallon of ethanol makes sense because it is “renewable.”

That a picture of a female guard in Abu Ghraib pointing at the genitals of a terrorist and laughing is deplorable but those same goofballs setting off an IED and killing our troops are just freedom fighters.

That a 70 year old woman with a Gadsden flag is a radical but an OWS protestor that defecates on a police car and breaks windows of businesses is a frustrated citizen.

That in spite of the fact that one third of the world is hungry it makes more sense to use food for fuel than drilling for a fuel source that nobody can eat.

The simple fact is that Democrats are the Dodo birds of the human race. The Dodo was discovered by Portuguese explorers in the late 1500′s. The name comes from the Portuguese word “Doudo” which means simpleton. They called this bird a simpleton because in their minds it lacked any common sense whatsoever. That lack of common sense or survival instinct eventually led to its demise as a species.

Wait a minute, that’s not really fair of me, I shouldn’t equate Democrats to a simple minded flightless bird that was too stupid to run from predators. The Dodo had a job foraging for food.

The new video message is the latest step in an escalating and historically unprecedented confrontation between the Roman Catholic Church and an American president.

It centers around what the American Catholic bishops see as the Obama administration’s efforts to restrict the right of Catholic citizens and institutions to freely exercise their religion as guaranteed by the 1st Amendment to the Constitution.

What singular cause could bring together the likes of Democratic campaign strategist James Carville, Republican Governor Bobby Jindal (LA), actor Sacha Baron Cohen, and 2,000 families, all under one roof? The answer: school choice — empowering parents with the ability to save their children from failing schools, thereby giving them a shot at a brighter future.

Those big names came together to kick off National School Choice Week in New Orleans over the weekend, a celebration that is being echoed in some 400 events across the country in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, with half the nation’s governors declaring “School Choice Week” in their states. Actor, comedian, and education advocate Bill Cosby offered his support for school choice, as well:

I strongly support National School Choice Week because all children in America should be able to access the best schools possible. We have a moral and societal obligation to give our children the opportunity to succeed in school, at work, and in life. We cannot meet that obligation unless parents are empowered to select the best schools of their children. I encourage everyone who wants to see a transformation of American education to get involved in National School Choice Week.

The groundswell of support comes after a year of significant strides in the school choice movement. A total of 12 states and the District of Columbia either enacted or expanded school choice options in 2011. Heritage education expert Lindsey Burke explains that last year, “more families than ever before gained access to school choice options, freeing them from assignment-by-zip code policies that often relegate families to the public school closest to their home, regardless of whether it meet their child’s needs.” As a result, more families have access to school choice options — including vouchers, tax credits, homeschooling, online learning, and even education savings accounts.

That expansion of school choice came after what appeared to be ominous news for some of America’s schoolchildren in 2009 and 2010. In Washington, D.C., home to some of the country’s most dangerous and under-performing schools, families of low-income children received vouchers through the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, giving them a chance to choose a brighter educational future. That light of hope, though, was about to be extinguished when Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) inserted a provision in a 2009 spending bill that would have ended the program. That changed, though, when the Tea Party revolution came to Congress, bringing with it a new movement toward school choice. In early 2011, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) successfully fought for the reauthorization of the D.C. scholarship program, ensuring that those families continued to have a choice in education.

The opportunities those children enjoy provide an example for the rest of the country. Heritage president Ed Feulner explains why school choice — and improving education in America — is such a central issue for our country’s future:

There are many good public schools across this country with dedicated teachers who deserve praise. Unfortunately, there also are many bad schools, especially in urban areas. When you consider the damage those institutions inflict, making it nearly impossible for students to learn and fulfill their potential, you realize it’s nothing short of a national crime. That’s why it’s so heartening to see the school-choice movement gaining ground.

This year, leaders at the state level should hear the cries of the families they represent and continue moving toward more school choice in 2012 by expanding options such as school vouchers, tax credits, education savings accounts, and online learning. It’s not a conservative issue or a liberal issue, Republican or Democrat. Ensuring that our children have the best education possible is an American issue, and it’s one that the country should get behind.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Jeff Landry (R, LA-03) released the following statement regarding the President’s State of the Union:

“Americans are tired of campaign slogans; we need real solutions. When the President rejects the Keystone Pipeline, he refuses thousands of new jobs, cheaper energy, and greater national security. When the President and Senate block our jobs bills, they fail to give Americans the economic recovery we need. And when the President and Washington establishment do nothing to cure the government’s addiction to spending, they fail our future generations. It’s time for them to be honest with the American people, balance America’s budget, and end business as usual.”

PLEASE NOTE: "Congressman Jeff Landry has not made an official announcement regarding his political plans this year. However he remains concerned about a broken Washington full of politicians that put bailouts and debt increases in front of efforts to create jobs and grow the economy." – Brent Littlefield, Landry political adviser.

See Tea Party release below followed by a story from the newspaper Politico last year.

TEA PARTY OF LOUISIANA DRAFTS JEFF LANDRY FOR REELECTION RUN
TPoL Looks For Conservative Leadership in the Congress from Jeff Landry
For Immediate Release
January 19, 2012
BATON ROUGE – The Tea Party of Louisiana (TPoL) drafts Congressman Jeff Landry to run for reelection and pledges its support for Jeff to once again be the Congressman from the 3rd District of Louisiana.

TPoL spokesman Bob Reid stated, “We feel that Jeff Landry offers the best opportunity to voice our opposition to the status quo in Washington, and that he is clearly the best advocate for reducing the size of government, reviving our economy, and restoring the power to We the People. We have drafted Jeff because he will continue to represent the best interests of Louisiana not the self-appointed “ruling class” in Washington. Jeff does not engage in Washington gimmicks like the politicians who recently voted to disapprove of the current debt increase after they voted to give the President the authority to raise it in August. Rather, Jeff stands up for fiscal responsibility and always fights for our future generations, without worrying about the next election."

Reid went on to say, “Jeff Landry speaks for us on many issues like fighting to repeal ‘Obamacare,’ reducing the size of government, fighting deficits & wasteful spending, ending bailouts & stimulus plans, opposing ‘Cap & Trade’ type legislation & taxes, getting the government off the backs of small business, and out of the lives of everyday citizens. We need more Americans & Congressmen like Jeff Landry to step up and help restore America to its Constitutional roots in our joint efforts to help bring about a Government governed by the people.”

TPoL is a non-profit, non-partisan group with members all across the state. TPoL is dedicated to working to restore constitutionally based, limited government at the federal, state and local levels.

Bob Reid, spokesman
Board of Directors Member
TEA Party of Louisiana, LLC
www.TEAPARTYOFLOUISIANA.NET
——
Politico Story from November of last year – Citizens United goes all in for Landry
By: David Catanese (Politico)

A Washington-based conservative group is choosing sides in a developing member-versus-member House primary in Louisiana.

The Citizens United Political Victory Fund sent $5,000 to freshman Republican Jeff Landry on Tuesday to boost his potential bid against four-term Rep. Charles Boustany.

“It is imperative that Congressman Jeff Landry remain in Congress to fight for the conservative cause,” said Citizens United President David Bossie. “CUPVF urges Congressman Landry to take this primary challenge head-on and campaign on his reform-minded conservative credentials.”

Redistricting has placed the two congressmen, who have very different profiles, in the same 3rd Congressional District.

Landry, a tea party favorite who this fall compared the Interior Department to the Gestapo, lost his southeastern Louisiana district due to reapportionment. Boustany, who is closer to establishment Republicans, including Speaker John Boehner, was accused by fellow Republicans of working with Democratic legislators to engineer a map more favorable to him.

This is the first intraparty scuffle in which Citizens United has intervened, and the group appears to be trying to persuade Landry to move forward with a run.

“Congressman Landry has taken bold stances by voting against the failed supercommittee, and for signing a letter with 71 of his fellow conservative colleagues that said no to any tax increases. At a time of great economic crisis, Congressman Landry has shown he will put principle above party politics,” Bossie said.

After the supercommittee’s failure, Landry took a direct shot at Boustany, saying he lacked “the guts and spine” to vocally oppose the endeavor when it congealed this summer.

Landry bested Boustany in third-quarter fundraising, $251,000 to $218,000, according to Federal Election Commission filings. …

paid for by Landry for Louisiana

President Obama said that he will delay his vacation and keep Congress in session until the passage of his desired payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits extension — two proposals that Obama said would create more jobs than the Keystone XL pipeline that his administration recently delayed.

“I would not ask anyone to do something I’m not willing to do myself,” Obama said when asked if he would go on vacation while keeping Congress in Washington D.C. “We are going to stay here as long as it takes [to get unemployment extended and pass the payroll tax cut].”

As Obama called for passage of those bills, he also responded to a recent Republican push to require him to approve the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada. “However many jobs might be generated by a Keystone pipeline,” he said, “they’re going to be a lot fewer than the jobs that are created by extending the payroll tax cut and extending unemployment insurance.”

If he’s not, he’s one of very few. Check out the Louisiana freshman Republican’s explanation for his “Present” vote on today’s House Resolution of Disapproval on President Obama’s request for an additional $1.2 trillion increase in the national debt:

“Once again, Washington politicians are failing to take responsibility for their actions instead of working for real solutions to our debt crisis. When the Washington politicians voted for the DC deal in August that raised the debt ceiling, they did nothing to cure Washington’s addiction to spending.

“And today’s vote is nothing more than a smokescreen to help Americans forget the Washington politicians’ vote for the disastrous debt deal and Super Committee. The Washington politicians know good and well even if the Senate miraculously agreed to the resolution, Congress doesn’t have enough votes to override a Presidential veto – meaning the debt will automatically increase by $1.2 trillion.

“If the Washington politicians really wanted to block the debt increase, they would have joined me in August and voted against the Budget Control Act. It’s a shame Washington politicians are spending today playing CYA – more concerned about a press release than the next generation.

“I refuse to partake in these Washington games that only serve as political cover for politicians worried about their next election. I am committed to real solutions not the status quo in Washington that has led us to this irresponsible level of debt.”

Landry isn’t likely to win many friends or influence many people among the Washington Establishment, but he just might be demonstrating exactly the right stance for succeeding in politics in the Tea Party era.

Fortunately, Landry is not alone in his disgust with this situation. The Club for Growth predicted it. Read more here.

The State Department will announce the decision on Keystone XL pipeline is “no,” as early as Wednesday, an industry source told Fox News, suggesting that the department will say 60 days is inadequate time to do the required environmental impact assessment on the path of the coveted pipeline.

While the State Department for three years has been reviewing the initial proposal to run a pipeline from Canada down to Texas through a sensitive Nebraska aquifer, it retreated early from indications it would approve the plan after environmentalists complained.

Industry workers and Republicans contend the project would create thousands of jobs, and Canada’s prime minister has warned if the U.S. can’t get on board, the North American nation will look to team with China.

In December, Congress attached to the payroll tax cut a deadline of 60 days for the State Department to determine approval for an alternative route.

On Tuesday, President Obama’s own jobs council suggested that it agrees with the pipeline concept. While not specifically mentioning Keystone in a report out Tuesday about improving competitiveness, the council said that when it comes to energy projects in general, the government needs to “expeditiously, though cautiously, move forward on projects that can support hundreds of thousands of jobs.”

“We think this all-in energy strategy can create significant economic growths and significant job creation,” said Lewis Hay, NextEra Energy CEO and a member of the president’s job council.

Obama has noted his environmental concerns when it comes to energy exploration but insisted Tuesday that a balance could be found.

“I think the recommendations are sound. We see enormous potential in production of traditional fossil fuels,” he said without mentioning Keystone.

As oil prices rose Wednesday on fresh signs the U.S. economy was improving, which could lead to stronger demand for gasoline and other energy products, the Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmental group, argued that the pipeline doesn’t make the U.S. anymore energy secure just because it would get oil from a close neighbor and friend.

Separately, House Speaker John Boehner accused the president of trying to put off a politically difficult decision until after the election. He added that the president is derelict if he lets the Chinese get the pipeline with Canada, rather than the U.S.

“If we don’t build this pipeline to bring that Canadian oil and pick up the North Dakota oil and deliver it to our refineries in the Gulf Coast, that oil is gonna get shipped out to the Pacific Ocean and will be sold to the Chinese. This is not good for our country,” Boehner said.

“The president wants to put this off until it’s convenient for him to make a decision. … The president’s got an opportunity to create 100,000 new jobs almost immediately. The president should say yes,” he said.

A recent check by the Texas Secretary of State’s office indicates that 600,000 registered voters do not have a valid driver’s license or state issued identification card. In Texas, identification is not required to register to vote but due to a bill just passed by the Texas Legislature, valid identification may be required at the polls to vote if Senate Bill 14 is cleared by the justice department.

As many as a quarter of voters in some small Texas counties might not be able to cast ballots if the federal government allows the new state voter ID law to go into effect.

One concern is that undocumented immigrants have registered to vote in Texas. Since no identification is required to register to vote , undocumented immigrants could register. In prior years, no id was required at the polls so it is possible that many non-citizens could have registered to vote and illegally cast ballots. Texas does not issue drivers licenses to illegal immigrants so many without identification could be turned away at the polls. Senator Fraser’s bill requires voters to show a valid government-issued photo ID — such as a Texas driver’s license, Department of Public Safety identification card, state concealed handgun license, U.S. military ID or U.S. passport — to vote in elections.

“Republicans are using cheap tricks to steal elections,” said Rebecca Acuña, spokeswoman for the Texas Democratic Party. “In certain counties, Republicans could disenfranchise a quarter of the voters currently participating in elections.”

U.S. Rep. Jeff Landry, R-New Iberia, touted his accomplishments in Con-gress and took a veiled swipe Thursday at his likely opponent in November’s election while speaking to the New Iberia Kiwanis Club.

At the luncheon, Landry harkened to August’s national debt increase fight and said he did not vote for the bill that raised the debt ceiling because it did not have a balanced budget amendment tied to it.

The House had sent a version of the bill — which included the amendment — to the Senate, but it was gone when the bill came back to the House..

“I would just like to see a show of hands. How many of you all agree that voting no was the right vote,” Landry said. A sea of hands raised.

U.S. Rep. Charles Boustany, R-Lafayette — Landry’s assumed competition — voted for the legislation. Neither congressmen has declared for the race. The congressmen would face each other in November because their districts were combined in reapportionment last year.

Over the course of the 30-minute talk and question-answer session, Landry consistently painted himself as being an outsider in Washington, anti-establishment.

“Let me tell you what happens. The leadership machine tries to bring you in and tries to mold you. They try to put you in a box,” Landry said. “They want you to get along, to go along. They want you to claim that you’re fighting for something … and then follow the status quo.”

That mentality, he said, has resulted in bailouts and deficits.

Also Landry chastised his own party, recalling the George W. Bush years when the Republicans controlled the House, Senate and White House.

“And yet we did not have the courage — we did not send people to Washington who had the courage — to tackle those fiscal issues that are now plaguing our country,” Landry said.

After the meeting, Kiwanis Club members spoke complimentary of their guest speaker.

“He brings up a lot of good issues that touch a lot of people,” said Troy Arceneaux of New Iberia. “He mentioned that he didn’t take the retirement and didn’t take the health care, and I think that’s huge from a character standpoint.”

Origin of Left & Right

Why it is that Conservatives are called the “right” and Liberals are called the “left.”

By chance I stumbled upon this verse in the Bible:
“The heart of the wise inclines to the right,
but the heart of the fool to the left.”
Ecclesiastes 10:2

“A wise man’s heart is at his right hand;
but a fool’s heart at his left”
Ecclesiastes 10:2

Thus sayeth the Lord. Amen.

Can’t get any simpler than that.

Subject: Spelling Lesson

The last four letters in American……….I Can
The last four letters in Republican…….I Can
The last four letters in Democrats………Rats

End of lesson. Test to follow in November, 2012

Remember, November is to be set aside as rodent extermination month

Thankfully, Louisiana Congressman Jeff Landry will soon be introducing important legislation that will rein in the imperial presidency of Barack Obama. The Executive Appointment Reform Act will bring back the checks and balances sorely missed during Obama’s years in the White House. This bold piece of legislation will prevent all regulations coming from the anti-business Consumer Financial Protection Bureau from becoming final until the Director has been confirmed by the United States Senate. The Landry legislation would also bar the National Labor Relations Board from having a quorum until its members are confirmed by the United States Senate. Finally, the Landry legislation will end payment to recess appointed individuals and put limitations on an appointee’s ability to perform voluntary or gratuitous service.

The point of the Landry legislation is to reverse the Constitutional damage President Obama has done with these unprecedented “recess” appointments. President Obama has overstepped his executive authority and will continue to do so until he is stopped. President Obama has thrived on power grabs, whether it is taking over the healthcare industry with Obamacare or the financial industry with Dodd-Frank. If President Obama orchestrates these purely partisan appointments now, in an election season, imagine what he’ll do during the lame duck session at the end of the year, or a second term when he doesn’t have to worry about his own reelection.

Congressmen like Louisiana’s Jeff Landry need to stand up in the face of President Obama’s imperial presidency now, before it is too late.
